Andy Burnham’s Economic Vision
Andy Burnham has unveiled his economic plans for Britain. Neal Lawson, representing the Burnham-aligned group Mainstream, elaborates on the rationale behind these proposals.
A Decade of Progress in Greater Manchester
Helen Pidd has been a constituent of Andy Burnham for nearly ten years. She observes that Greater Manchester has prospered under his leadership. Now, Burnham aims to replicate the success he has achieved in her region across the entire country. On Monday, at the People’s History Museum in Manchester, Burnham presented his economic manifesto. Unless an unexpected challenge arises, he is expected to move into No 10 Downing Street by the end of July. However, he envisions establishing a different kind of No 10 — one based in Manchester. His proposals are ambitious, but questions remain about the feasibility of "rewiring" Britain.
Neal Lawson on Devolution and Nationalisation
Neal Lawson, founder of the pressure group Compass and more recently associated with the Burnham-aligned Mainstream, discusses with Helen the motivations behind Burnham’s emphasis on devolving power and his nationalisation agenda. Lawson remarks on the progress made so far, stating:
"I think what Burnham has done is kind of, by a sort of minor miracle, reach base camp. And now there’s the mountain to climb."
