Zoe Backstedt Claims Stage Three Victory at Tour de Suisse Femmes
British cyclist Zoe Backstedt secured a win on stage three of the Tour de Suisse Femmes on Friday, showcasing a powerful sprint finish in Bad Ragaz. The 21-year-old Welsh rider capitalized on an excellent lead-out from her team to surge ahead in the final 300 meters of a predominantly flat stage, which saw the breakaway caught with 19 kilometers remaining.
"My whole team did an amazing job today and truly I couldn't have done it without them," said Canyon-Sram's Backstedt.
"I was a bit nervous when the break went and we didn't have anyone in it. But it was controlled quite nicely and we managed to bring it back with just enough time before the finish."
This victory marked Backstedt's ninth professional win. Although she is not a climber and thus not a contender for the overall classification, she currently trails the Italian race leader Elisa Longo Borghini by over 16 minutes.
Fellow British rider Lauren Dickson remains second in the overall standings, 25 seconds behind Longo Borghini, despite a late incident where she clipped the barriers with a pedal 3.5 kilometers from the finish line. All riders involved in the crash were credited with the same finishing time under the final 5-kilometer rule.
Looking Ahead to Stage Four Time Trial
Backstedt reflected on her performance and upcoming challenges:
"Tomorrow will be super brutal with the heat," she said.
"Every day has been super hard with the heat, and the climbing, but tomorrow it should be a good day for me again."
Stage four, scheduled for Saturday, features a 24-kilometer time trial. Backstedt, who has won five time trials in her brief career, is among the favorites to achieve consecutive stage victories.
The Tour de Suisse Femmes, spanning five stages, will conclude on Sunday with a mountainous loop beginning and ending in Villars-sur-Ollon.
Men's Race Update
In the men's competition, Ecuadorian rider Jhonatan Narvaez won stage three in a sprint finish ahead of Belgium's Xandro Meurisse. Tadej Pogačar, whose fiancée Urška Žigart suffered a broken jaw in a severe crash on Thursday, maintained his lead and retained the yellow jersey.
The UAE Team Emirates rider adopted a more conservative approach after two days of aggressive riding and currently holds a 2 minute and 50 second advantage over Richard Carapaz. With two stages remaining, the race is set to conclude in Villars-sur-Ollon on Sunday.
