Elisa Balsamo Secures Stage Two Victory at Women's Giro d'Italia

Elisa Balsamo, who previously won two stages of the Giro in 2022 and holds a world championship title on the track, reinforced her lead in the women's Giro d'Italia by winning the second stage with a well-executed sprint finish in Caorle.

At 28 years old, Balsamo was awarded the victory for the opening stage on Saturday after Lorena Wiebes was disqualified due to a bike weight violation, despite Wiebes crossing the finish line first.

On Sunday, Balsamo outpaced Irish cyclist Lara Gillespie and fellow Italian Chaira Consonni at the conclusion of the 156km stage near Venice, maintaining her hold on the pink jersey.

The podium for the second stage mirrored that of the first, with Balsamo launching her sprint approximately 200 meters from the finish line to secure the win.

"I have been waiting for this win so much," Balsamo said.
"I'm just so happy. I want to say a big thank you to my team-mates because they did an amazing job the whole day. And then I just did a really good sprint. It was an amazing day.
"I was just completely focused on the finish line and I pushed until the end because I knew that everyone could come from the back, they are so strong."

Balsamo, riding for Lidl-Trek, now leads Gillespie by eight seconds in the overall standings, with Consonni trailing by 12 seconds. The main peloton is 20 seconds behind the leader.

The nine-stage race is scheduled to conclude on 7 June.
