Vollering Claims Stage Five Victory at Giro d'Italia
Demi Vollering secured a win on stage five of the women's Giro d'Italia, while Anna van der Breggen maintained her position as the overall leader, retaining the pink jersey.
The Dutch cyclist outpaced her fellow countrywoman in a four-rider sprint finish at the conclusion of the first mountain stage of this year's event. Germany's Antonia Niedermaier finished third, sharing the same time, followed by Canada's Isabella Holmgren, who crossed the line two seconds later.
Elisa Longo Borghini, the two-time defending champion of the race, was dropped during the final ascent of the 146-kilometer route ending in Santo Stefano di Cadore. Nevertheless, the Italian rider regained some time on the descent, ultimately finishing fifth, 15 seconds behind the winner, closely followed by New Zealand's Niamh Fisher-Black.
"It was a very hard day, with the race splitting much earlier than expected," said Vollering.
"Fortunately, I had Lauren Dickson with me, and she kept the pace high before I launched my attack. Now we need to avoid any risks over the next two stages before Saturday's queen stage."
Vollering's victory completes her collection of Grand Tour stage wins and elevates her to second place in the general classification, trailing four-time winner Van der Breggen by one minute.
The former Tour de France Femmes and La Vuelta Femenina champion is pursuing the distinction of becoming only the second cyclist to win all three Grand Tours in women's cycling, following Annemiek van Vleuten.
On Thursday, the race will cover 159 kilometers from Ala to Brescello. This stage is predominantly flat but features a technical finish that is expected to culminate in a bunch sprint.
