Trump Proposes $152 Million to Restore Alcatraz Prison

Donald Trump has requested $152 million to restore Alcatraz, the former federal prison located on an island in San Francisco Bay, according to a budget proposal released on Friday for the 2027 fiscal year.

In May of last year, Trump initially urged the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Homeland Security to undertake the rebuilding of the prison. He praised Alcatraz’s legacy in a post on Truth Social.

“When we were a more serious nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” he wrote then. “The reopening of Alcatraz will serve as a symbol of law, order and justice.”

Controversy Surrounding the Restoration Plan

The proposal has sparked debate, with several elected officials in California questioning both the feasibility and the value of such a project.

Currently, Alcatraz lacks essential infrastructure, including water, power, gas, and sewage systems, as reported by the San Francisco Standard.

California State Senator Scott Wiener’s office estimated this week that the cost to rebuild the property would exceed $2 billion, according to KQED.

Last year, in an interview with CBS Sacramento, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Trump’s plan as a “colossally bad fiscal idea,” adding:

“Nothing about this makes any sense.”

On Friday, Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House, issued a statement condemning the proposal:

“Rebuilding Alcatraz into a modern prison is a stupid notion that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayer dollars and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.”

Funding and Project Details

The administration intends to allocate the $152 million to cover the initial year of restoration costs, as outlined in the budget proposal. However, if the plan proceeds, the timeline for reopening the facility remains uncertain.

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This $152 million request is part of a broader $1.7 billion funding proposal aimed at addressing the Bureau of Prisons’ deteriorating detention facilities.

Historical Context of Alcatraz

Alcatraz, known as “the Rock,” served as a maximum-security penitentiary housing some of the nation’s most notorious criminals from 1934 until its closure in 1963.

Its island location made escapes difficult but also resulted in high operational costs. According to the Bureau of Prisons, maintenance expenses were a primary factor leading to the facility’s closure.

Since then, Alcatraz has become a prominent historical site attracting over one million tourists annually.
