Trump Signals Positive Talks with Iran Amid Operation Epic Fury
US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about ongoing talks with Iran represent some of his most conciliatory statements since the onset of Operation Epic Fury, though they leave many questions unanswered.
In the early hours of Monday, just before the opening of financial markets, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would delay strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days while negotiations continue. This marked a shift from his earlier threats to "obliterate" these targets unless Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iran has denied any official contact with the Trump administration, casting doubt on the nature of the talks Trump referenced. This denial has raised questions about whether Trump was referring to actual negotiations or attempting to soothe volatile global markets.
Trump Comments on Negotiations and Regional Relations
Speaking to reporters in Palm Beach, Trump stated that both sides are seeking a deal and emphasized that the US has "a great relationship" with numerous potential partners in the Middle East, though he did not specify which ones.
Trump mentioned that special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were involved in the discussions but did not provide further details about their counterparts or the topics under consideration.
Possible subjects of the talks include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's ballistic missile program, uranium enrichment, or a ceasefire—an option Trump had previously minimized.
Contradictions in Trump’s Statements on Iranian Leadership
The US president has repeatedly asserted that multiple levels of Iranian leadership have been eliminated. At a White House event on Friday, he remarked that it is "hard to find leaders in Iran to talk to because they keep getting killed."
Yet, in a brief phone interview with CNBC reporter Joe Kernen following his Monday morning post, Trump acknowledged that Iran still has representatives, contradicting his earlier assertions. He suggested these representatives are behaving differently from their predecessors. Kernen noted that Trump was "insisting" this change amounts to a form of regime change.
Iran Denies Talks, Complicating US Narrative
Iran’s denial of any talks complicates the administration’s narrative and is likely to prompt challenging questions.
An unnamed Iranian source quoted by Fars News Agency, affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), described Trump’s statement as a victory for the regime, claiming that Trump "backed down" following Iran’s threats of retaliatory strikes on energy infrastructure across the region.
The possibility exists that the talks are a strategic ploy, similar to last summer when discussions reportedly continued until US airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities during Operation Midnight Hammer.
Trump often emphasizes that his decision-making process is opaque, stating that his thinking on issues is a mystery to most observers.
Market Reactions and Strategic Timing
Despite limited evidence of sustained negotiations, Trump’s post triggered a rally in US stock market futures and a sharp decline in global oil prices.
What had appeared to be a bleak day for major world economies was instead marked by a note of optimism.
The timing of Trump’s announcement—just before US markets opened—may have been deliberate.
His prior threat to attack Iranian energy facilities by Monday evening, after a self-imposed deadline had passed, had sparked widespread fears of escalating conflict.
By postponing action for five days, Trump has temporarily alleviated those concerns.
Uncertainties Remain Over Negotiations and Regional Stability
It remains unclear how substantive any US-Iranian negotiations have been, whether the US and Israel will continue airstrikes, or if Iran is still restricting access to the Strait of Hormuz—the initial justification for Trump’s Monday bombing deadline.
This development may signal a genuine breakthrough or reflect a president seeking to buy time amid a challenging situation.
