Infant Killed in Daylight Shooting in Brooklyn
A seven-month-old girl was fatally shot while seated in her pushchair during broad daylight in Brooklyn, New York City, according to police reports.
Authorities believe the infant was an unintended casualty in a suspected gang-related shooting incident.
Incident Details and Police Response
Video footage from the scene depicts two men riding a motorbike against traffic in the Williamsburg neighborhood. The passenger on the back of the motorbike drew a firearm and discharged at least two rounds, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a press briefing.
The motorbike subsequently crashed, leading to the apprehension of the suspected shooter. However, a large-scale manhunt was underway for the driver, Commissioner Tisch added.
"A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,"
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani remarked.
"Today is a devastating reminder of how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city."
Witness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath
At the time of the shooting, several adults and children, including two in buggies, were gathered on a street corner. The infant's parents sought refuge in a nearby corner store, where they discovered their child had been shot, according to CBS, the BBC's US partner.
"All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby was bleeding from [her] head,"
witness Bernius Maldonado told CBS.
Video footage inside the store, published by the New York Post, captures the moment the mother is about to pick up the infant and notices the injuries. She then becomes hysterical, jumping up and down with her hands clasped behind her head.
Emergency Response and Victim's Condition
Emergency services were contacted at approximately 13:21 local time (17:21 GMT). The infant was transported to Woodhull Hospital, located nearby, where she was pronounced dead. Police confirmed no other fatalities or injuries resulted from the incident.
"As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them,"
Tisch expressed. "It is unspeakable."
Suspects and Investigation
Police reviewed footage showing the suspects crashing into a car shortly after fleeing the scene. Both individuals were ejected from the moped during the crash, with the rear passenger landing forcefully enough to lose both shoes, Commissioner Tisch noted.
An ambulance was summoned for the injured male, who was taken to Brooklyn Hospital and subsequently placed in police custody.
Investigators believe this individual matches the description of the shooter based on his clothing and appearance. Although he was taken into custody as part of an unrelated investigation, police are actively working to link him to the shooting.
