Avalanche Incident in Lake Tahoe

An avalanche in California's Lake Tahoe region has resulted in 10 backcountry skiers being reported missing, while six others remain stranded and are awaiting rescue, according to authorities.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office reported that the avalanche occurred around 11:30 PST (19:30 GMT) in the Castle Peak area near the town of Truckee.

Group Composition and Weather Conditions

The group involved consisted of 16 individuals, including four guides and 12 clients. Current weather conditions are hazardous, with a significant risk of additional avalanches.

Rescue Efforts

The sheriff's office stated that

"Highly-skilled rescue ski teams"
have been deployed from two nearby ski resorts to assist in the rescue operation. The six survivors have been
"directed to shelter in place as best they can in the conditions,"
according to the sheriff.

On Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff posted on Facebook:

"At least six of the skiers have survived the avalanche and remain at the avalanche site, awaiting rescue, with the remaining ten unaccounted for at the time of this release."

Additionally, a SnoCat team, which operates tracked vehicles commonly used for snow grooming at ski resorts, was dispatched to the site.

Support from Local Experts

Experts from the nearby Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and the Alder Creek Adventure Center are also involved in efforts to reach the avalanche site.

The ongoing rescue operation currently involves 46 emergency first responders. The sheriff's office emphasized that weather conditions remain highly dangerous.

Weather and Avalanche Forecast

The Sierra Avalanche Center provided a forecast cited in the sheriff's statement, indicating:

"Large avalanches are expected to occur Tuesday, Tuesday night, and into at least early Wednesday morning across backcountry terrain."

The avalanche center has assigned a danger rating of "high," which corresponds to a four out of five on their scale.

Snowfall Details

The Boreal Mountain Ski Resort, located near the accident site, reported receiving 30 inches (76 cm) of snowfall within the last 24 hours.
