Individual Detained in Connection to Nancy Guthrie Case

An individual was detained on Tuesday south of Tucson, Arizona, by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department for questioning related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, according to multiple reports.

Law enforcement officials plan to conduct a search at a location connected to the detained person, as reported by ABC News.

FBI Releases New Footage of Suspected Armed Individual

Earlier on Tuesday, the FBI released new photos and video footage depicting an armed individual who appeared to tamper with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door on the morning of her disappearance. FBI Director Kash Patel described the individual as masked and wearing gloves and a backpack.

The black-and-white images show the person approaching Guthrie’s door, waving what appears to be a plant in one image, and beginning to dismantle the Nest camera in another.

Patel stated on X (formerly Twitter):

"Working with our partners, as of [Tuesday] morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at … Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance."

Savannah Guthrie Appeals for Public Assistance

Savannah Guthrie, host of NBC’s Today and Nancy Guthrie’s daughter, posted on social media:

"We believe she is still alive. Bring her home."

On Monday, Savannah Guthrie made a public appeal for anyone with information to contact law enforcement, stating:

Details of the Investigation and Ransom Note

The FBI director noted that the images were "previously inaccessible" and were obtained from residual data found in back-end systems. The search for Nancy Guthrie, aged 84, has extended into its second week.

The Guthrie family revealed on Sunday that they would pay kidnappers to ensure Nancy’s safe return, although authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of the ransom demand.

Officials reported on Monday night that there has been no ongoing communication between the Guthrie family and the suspected kidnappers, and no suspect or person of interest has been identified at this time.

FBI and Law Enforcement Efforts

The FBI is deploying additional agents from field offices across the United States to Tucson, Arizona, where Nancy Guthrie’s blood was found outside her home.

According to NBC News, the FBI stated:

"We are currently operating a 24-hour command post that includes crisis management experts, analytic support, and investigative teams. But we still need the public’s help. Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home. We need that person to share what they know. Please call us at 1-800-CALL-FBI."

Family and Community Response

Michael Rudzena, the Guthrie family’s pastor, described Nancy Guthrie on television as a "strong woman" and "fiercely loving." He added:

"Prayer opens up possibilities in our own hearts. Leaving a door open for hope is a way to fight against that fatality."

Background on Disappearance and Doorbell Camera Issues

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home early on February 1. A significant challenge in the investigation was the disconnection of her doorbell camera at the time of her disappearance. Since she was not an active r to the doorbell camera service, law enforcement could not immediately access footage.
