Arrest Made in Connection to Disappearance
Authorities in the Bahamas have detained a 59-year-old American man in Abaco in connection with the disappearance of an American woman who went missing while on a small boat with her husband, according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Wednesday. The man is currently being questioned, though his name has not been disclosed.
A US Coast Guard official confirmed to the BBC on Wednesday that a criminal investigation has been launched regarding the disappearance of Lynette Hooker.
Details of the Incident
Lynette Hooker went missing on Saturday after falling from an 8ft (2.4m) hard-bottom dinghy and being carried out to sea by strong currents, as reported by her husband to authorities.
The Coast Guard declined to provide details about the investigation, including any information about potential suspects.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force did not immediately respond to the BBC's request for additional information about the arrest.
Family Statements and Search Efforts
In a statement shared with US media partner CBS News on Wednesday, Brian Hooker expressed his heartbreak over his wife's disappearance and extended gratitude to authorities and volunteers involved in the ongoing search.
"I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas," he said.
"Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus."
Lynette Hooker's daughter, Karli Aylesworth, told CBS that her mother has been sailing for over ten years and is an experienced swimmer. She expressed confusion over how her mother could have fallen overboard and disappeared, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
Sequence of Events Leading to Disappearance
Brian Hooker informed police that he and Lynette departed from Hope Town heading to Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands on Saturday evening when Lynette fell overboard, taking the boat's keys with her.
He then paddled the dinghy to shore, arriving at the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 04:00 local time (09:00 BST) on Sunday. Upon arrival, he informed a person there about his wife's disappearance, who subsequently alerted the authorities.
Official Investigation and Search Operations
On Tuesday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force issued a statement on social media confirming that an investigation was underway and that multiple agencies were involved in the search for Lynette Hooker.
