Storm Forecast and Impact
The state is preparing for a powerful kona storm expected to bring intense winds, thunderstorms, and potentially significant flooding across multiple islands this week.
On Monday, Governor Green announced he had issued an emergency proclamation to mobilize additional resources to the affected areas in response to the anticipated severe weather.
“It’s going to be kind of a rough and tumble week with the weather,” Green said in a video posted on social media. “Be very safe. Be particularly safe on the roads.”
The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that a “large and powerful kona storm” will deliver heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in smaller islands and urban regions. The storm is also expected to produce severe thunderstorms and gusty winds. Initial impacts will be felt on Kauai, Niihau, and Oahu starting Tuesday, before spreading to other islands over the following days.
According to a statement from the governor’s office, the islands could experience more damaging weather conditions later in the week.
Precautionary Measures and Safety Advisories
In response to the forecast, the state has closed several parks and trails. Authorities have urged the public to avoid forested and coastal areas due to risks posed by storm surge, high surf, rising streams, and falling trees.
“Our priority is keeping the people of Hawaiʻi safe,” Green emphasized.
A flood watch remains in effect until Saturday. The NWS advises residents to prepare by identifying evacuation routes and shelters, and making arrangements for pets and vulnerable family members.
Laura Farris, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, indicated that some areas of the islands could receive over 20 inches of rain, though she noted this is an approximate estimate.
“But that’s just a ballpark estimate,” Farris said.
