Introduction to General Christopher LaNeve's Appointment
General Christopher LaNeve is poised to assume the role of acting Chief of Staff of the US Army, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner. This appointment follows the request by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth for Randy George to step down from the position, which George had held since 2023.
The Chief of Staff position is the highest-ranking role within the Army, with office holders typically serving a four-year term.
Endorsement and Experience
Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesperson, described LaNeve, who previously served as Vice Chief of Staff, as:
"a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault".
This leadership change occurs amid ongoing conflict involving Iran and is part of a broader reorganization of the US military initiated by Hegseth since his tenure at the Pentagon began.
Military Restructuring and Career Progression
Since taking office, Hegseth has dismissed more than a dozen senior military leaders in just over a year. LaNeve has benefited from this restructuring, advancing to more senior roles within the Pentagon. This appointment marks LaNeve's third career advancement under Hegseth's leadership.
LaNeve was appointed Vice Chief of Staff in February 2026, succeeding James Mingus, who retired early from the role. Upon this appointment, Hegseth praised LaNeve as:
"a generational leader" who will "help ensure the Army revives the warrior ethos, rebuilds for the modern battlefield, and deters our enemies around the world".
Before becoming Vice Chief of Staff, LaNeve served as a senior military assistant to Hegseth starting in April 2025. He replaced Lieutenant General Jennifer Short, who was dismissed by Hegseth shortly after his arrival at the Pentagon.
Military Background and Service Record
LaNeve has held multiple high-level military positions throughout his career. He joined the military in 1990 after graduating from the University of Arizona. Over his 36 years of service, he has led several units, including the Eighth Army in South Korea and the 82nd Airborne Division.
His operational experience includes multiple combat deployments, notably in Afghanistan and Iraq.
