Fatal Shooting Outside Austin Bar Raises Terrorism Concerns
Two individuals lost their lives and several others were injured in a shooting incident outside a bar in Austin, Texas. The FBI has indicated that the event may be connected to terrorism.
Authorities responded to reports of a "male shooter" near Buford's bar, located in the capital of Texas, at approximately 2 a.m. (0800 GMT) on Sunday.
Police confirmed that, in addition to the two deceased victims, the suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene. Fourteen people were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been disclosed by law enforcement. Officials have also refrained from commenting on the suspect's motive or providing further details regarding the potential terrorism link.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that officers were dispatched following reports of a man armed with a gun at Buford's, situated on West Sixth Street, a well-known entertainment district in Austin.
"A man in a large SUV put on his flashers, rolled down his window and fired a pistol, striking people on the patio and sidewalk outside the bar,"Davis stated.
She further explained that the suspect then parked the vehicle nearby, exited with a rifle, and began walking back toward the bar. Three police officers who were approaching the suspect shot and killed him at an intersection.
Officials searched the SUV and confirmed it was not carrying explosives. However, Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran of the FBI's San Antonio office noted that there were indicators within the vehicle and on the suspect suggesting a possible connection to terrorism.
"We are committed to seeing this process through to the very end,"Doran said, adding that the investigation remains in its early stages and he was not prepared to disclose further details.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Of the fourteen individuals hospitalized, three remain in critical condition, according to Rob Luckritz, head of Austin-Travis County Emergency Management Services.
Chief Davis highlighted that the presence of enhanced police and emergency resources in the entertainment district over the weekend enabled a rapid response to the incident.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson commended the swift actions of law enforcement and emergency personnel, noting that the response time was 57 seconds.
"I'm very thankful for the speed,"Watson remarked.
"They definitely saved lives."
