Multiple Victims Shot in Coney Island on Independence Day

At least eight individuals, including four children, were shot and injured on Saturday evening during the Fourth of July celebrations in New York City's Coney Island neighborhood, according to police reports.

The shooting occurred around 10:35 p.m. on West 30th Street in Brooklyn, near a boardwalk where a fireworks display had taken place less than an hour earlier.

The injured include a 33-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman who were both shot in the chest; a 25-year-old woman; and a 37-year-old man who sustained a shoulder wound. Among the children, a six-year-old boy was shot in the stomach; a seven-year-old boy was wounded in the legs or thigh; another six-year-old boy was also shot in the stomach; and two additional boys, aged 12 and 14, were injured.

All victims were transported to hospitals, with seven reported to be in stable condition. The 21-year-old woman was reported to be in critical condition.

Police recovered a pistol equipped with an extended magazine and found 10 shell casings at the scene; however, no arrests have been made to date.

Police Investigation and Statements

New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided details during a press briefing on Sunday, stating that the victims were located in a courtyard where a family barbecue was taking place.

“An unknown male dressed in all-black and wearing a black ski-mask approached the fence line and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard and then fled on foot,” Tisch said. “There is no indication at this time that there was any argument or altercation at the barbecue before the shooting occurred.”

Tisch also mentioned that a gang-related homicide had recently occurred on the same block and that authorities are investigating any possible connection between the two incidents.

New York Mayor Eric Adams addressed the incident during the briefing, emphasizing the city's stance on violence.

“There is no place in our city for this kind of violence,” Adams said. “We will not tolerate it, and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal.”

Context of Mass Shootings in the United States

As of Sunday morning, there had been at least 215 mass shootings across the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonpartisan resource that defines mass shootings as events where four or more victims are wounded or killed.

On Saturday alone, the nation’s semiquincentennial, at least six mass shootings were reported nationwide, with two additional incidents reported by Sunday morning.

The United States consistently experiences high numbers of mass shootings, prompting calls for more comprehensive gun control legislation. However, Congress has historically not enacted significant restrictions.

Additional Shooting Incident in Brooklyn

The Coney Island shooting occurred just hours before an NYPD officer from the sex offender monitoring unit was shot in his ballistic vest in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in what appeared to be a targeted attack.

Police used stun guns to subdue and arrest an 18-year-old suspect, according to Commissioner Tisch. The officer sustained minor injuries.

Tisch noted that this early Sunday attack coincided with the ninth anniversary of the murder of NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia, who was ambushed while in a marked police vehicle.

Recent Crime Statistics in New York City

The shootings in Brooklyn came two days after Commissioner Tisch announced that the NYPD recorded the fewest shootings, shooting victims, and murders for the first half of the year in recorded history.

There were 322 shooting incidents, surpassing the previous low of 337 set in 2018 and 2025. The number of shooting victims was 381, beating the previous low of 397 set in 2025. Additionally, there were 122 murders, breaking the previous low of 136 set in 2017.

The NYPD also reported a 5.8% decrease in major crime citywide.
