America's 250th Birthday Celebrated in Washington DC
Thousands gathered in the US capital to commemorate the country's 250th anniversary on a day marked by extreme weather conditions, delays, and an extensive fireworks display.
The festivities included a flyover, a concert, and a speech by US President Donald Trump. However, a thunderstorm in the early evening caused an evacuation of the National Mall, resulting in delays to the scheduled events.
The evening concluded with what is reported to be the largest fireworks display ever held in the United States, illuminating the night sky.
Significance of the 4 July Holiday
The federal holiday on 4 July marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 by the 13 US colonies, which ended British rule and established American independence.
BBC correspondent Richard Preston was present at the celebrations to report on the events.
