Incident at Rossall Beach

A woman has died following an attempt to rescue her pet dog from the sea.

Lancashire Police reported that the woman and a man entered the water at Rossall Beach in Thornton Cleveleys to rescue their dog, which had become stuck, and both encountered difficulties.

The coastguard rescued the pair shortly after 20:30 BST on Saturday. The woman, who was in her 60s, later died in hospital.

Police stated that the man, also in his 60s, remains in critical condition in hospital after the incident near Fleetwood Beach Cafe. The dog was recovered safe and well.

Police Statement and Investigation

A police spokeswoman said the couple received treatment at the scene, but

"sadly the woman, aged in her 60s, was pronounced dead at hospital"
.

She added,

"Enquiries to identify her next of kin are ongoing."

Emergency Response

HM Coastguard Fleetwood reported that two people were

"brought ashore"
at Rossall Beach and were given immediate medical care.

Two coastguard officers involved in the rescue were also taken to hospital as a precaution after ingesting sea water.

Additional emergency services attending the scene included Blackpool RNLI, North West Ambulance Service, and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

Recent Water-Related Deaths

In the past week, there have been at least 15 water-related deaths following a period of hot weather.

This number includes 12-year-old Junior Slater from Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley, who was swimming with friends at the River Ribble in Ribchester on Tuesday.
