UK Announces Largest Drone Delivery to Ukraine

The United Kingdom is set to provide Ukraine with 120,000 drones, marking the largest shipment of its kind, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Drones have become a dominant element on both sides of the conflict in Ukraine, which entered its fifth year in February.

Statements from UK Officials and Ukrainian Leadership

Defence Secretary John Healey described the delivery as a "big boost," noting that "with eyes on the Middle East in recent weeks, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin wants us to be distracted." Healey is scheduled to co-chair a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Berlin later this week.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine had captured a Russian position using solely ground-based and aerial drones for the first time.

The announcement of the UK drone package follows Zelensky's remarks that US peace negotiators "have no time for Ukraine" due to the war with Iran, as reported by AFP.

Details of the Drone Package

The drone package will include a variety of types: long-range strike drones, reconnaissance drones, logistics drones, and drones with maritime capabilities. Many of these are produced by UK-based companies.

The MoD stated that delivery of this "cutting-edge battlefield technology" began this month.

"Ukrainians continue to fight with huge courage and nothing will distract us from continuing to stand with them for as long as it takes to secure peace," Healey said in a statement.

Upcoming Meetings and Additional Support

Healey is set to co-chair a meeting of the 50-nation Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Berlin alongside NATO Secretary General Rutte and the Ukrainian and German defence ministers.

Additionally, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce further support measures for Ukraine at a meeting of international finance ministers in Washington DC.

Recent Russian Attacks and Ceasefire Status

Following the expiration of a ceasefire intended to mark Orthodox Easter at the end of Sunday, there have been renewed Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Overnight, Ukraine's northern Sumy region experienced three separate strikes targeting an industrial zone in the city, including attacks while rescuers were operating there, according to the country's emergency services.

Russian strikes also hit the southern area of Odesa, causing fires near the port vicinity.

Peace Talks and Diplomatic Efforts

Several rounds of peace talks have taken place with the United States acting as a mediator; however, the process has been on hold since former US President Donald Trump shifted focus to the Middle East.

Kyiv has repeatedly proposed a full and stable ceasefire as a preliminary step toward negotiating a lasting resolution to Russia's invasion.

Conversely, Moscow insists on agreeing to a peace deal before ceasing hostilities, leading to accusations from Kyiv that Russia is not serious about ending the conflict.
