Arrests Linked to Nottingham Maternity and Mortuary Investigation
Police investigating maternity service failings in Nottingham have arrested two men regarding operational practices within the city's mortuary services.
Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust manages mortuary services at both the Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital under a licence issued by the Human Tissue Authority.
Nottinghamshire Police reported that two men, aged 55 and 59, were arrested on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.
The arrests are part of Operation Perth, an investigation initiated in 2023 following identified failings that resulted in the deaths or injuries of hundreds of babies.
This investigation runs concurrently with the largest maternity inquiry in NHS history, led by independent senior midwife Donna Ockenden.
Operation Perth uncovered breaches of the Human Tissue Act regulations concerning the management and operational procedures of the mortuary services, according to police statements.
Deputy Chief Constable Rob Griffin said: "We recognise this will be particularly distressing for affected families who are part of Operation Perth."
"If you are one of these families and wish to speak with us, please make contact with us by calling 0115 844 5002 or email OPPerth@Notts.Police.uk."
