Drumduan School to Close After 40 Years
A private school in Moray, co-founded by Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton, is set to close due to financial difficulties, it has been announced. Drumduan School, located near Forres, has operated for 40 years with an emphasis on alternative, practical learning methods rather than traditional classroom settings and formal testing.

The school’s unique approach included minimal time spent at desks and in conventional classrooms, with activities such as tai chi-style exercises starting the day and science lessons involving hands-on projects like canoe building or cooking. BBC Scotland News visited the school in 2017 to highlight these distinctive teaching methods.
Closure of Kindergarten Following Earlier School Closures
The trustees of Drumduan School announced that the kindergarten provision will cease at the end of the current academic year on 30 June, following a review of the school's financial sustainability. This decision comes after the earlier closure of the lower school in February and the upper school in March.
In February, a legal challenge brought by a group of private schools against the UK government’s removal of the VAT exemption on school fees was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, adding to the financial pressures faced by Drumduan.
Statement from Trustees
In a statement posted on the school’s website, the trustees expressed their regret over the closure decision, emphasizing their responsibility to govern the institution prudently.
"This decision follows a careful review of financial sustainability and reflects the trustees' responsibilities to govern Drumduan,"
"Despite sustained efforts to secure alternative funding, we have not been able to establish the financial foundations necessary to continue. It was not a decision taken lightly."
The statement also highlighted support measures for staff and families during the transition period, including individual conversations and guidance on next steps.
"Staff and families are being supported throughout the transition process, with access to individual conversations and guidance on next steps."
Gratitude to Staff, Families, and Community
The trustees conveyed their deep appreciation for the dedication and creativity of the kindergarten staff, acknowledging their care for the children during challenging times.
"We wish to place on record our immense gratitude to the kindergarten staff, whose dedication, creativity and care for our children has been wonderful in these challenging times."
They also extended sincere thanks to the families, staff, friends, and supporters—both past and present—who have contributed to Drumduan’s community over the past four decades.
"The trustees would like to express their sincere gratitude to the many families, staff, friends and supporters - past and present - who have contributed to the life of Drumduan over its 40 years."
The statement concluded by reflecting on the lasting impact of the school’s educational philosophy on its students.
"It is comforting to know the children who have been part of our community carry with them their learning, the wonder and creativity nurtured in their early years, and the human connections formed during their time at Drumduan."
Tilda Swinton’s Connection to Drumduan
Tilda Swinton, who co-founded the school, has a personal connection through her own twin children, who attended Drumduan. She was present to watch them perform at their last class concert.

Swinton is an acclaimed actress, having won an Oscar for her role in Michael Clayton. Her filmography also includes notable titles such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Doctor Strange and Avengers: Endgame.
