Rat Infestation at Parcelforce Worldwide Depot

Royal Mail has undertaken deep cleaning of parcels at its Parcelforce Worldwide depot located in Maesglas, Newport, following a rat infestation.

Operations at the depot have been "temporarily moved" after reports indicated that some parcels were contaminated with rat urine and droppings.

Affected parcels have been withheld for "examination and deep cleaning" conducted by a specialist contractor.

Royal Mail's Response to the Issue

Royal Mail, the operator of Parcelforce Worldwide, stated that the "localised issue" was "identified and addressed promptly" through "deep cleaning and specialist pest control action."

They further added that parcels will be released to customers once it is deemed safe to do so.

Employee Concerns and Allegations

An anonymous source speaking to BBC Wales described the situation as a "significant rat infestation that management has failed to properly resolve" which has persisted for several months.

The source reported that rats are "frequently seen across the site" and have "chewed through" the fuel injector lines of one delivery van.

According to the source, the AA inspected the van and remarked,

"you have a rat problem in there don't you?"
The van was subsequently taken off the road for repairs.

The source further alleged,

"Despite this, management continues to allow these vehicles to be used, putting drivers at risk."

They also stated,

"Parcels within the depot have also been contaminated with rat urine and droppings, and some have been visibly chewed."

Following the issue being raised, the source claimed that only "limited action" has been taken and that the infestation "remains ongoing."

Official Statement from Royal Mail

A Royal Mail spokesperson refuted claims that "limited or insufficient action has been taken."

They confirmed that specialist support had been mobilised, including baiting, trapping, and proofing work to prevent further access, and that all necessary steps were being taken to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Health Risks Associated with Rats

Rats are known carriers of several serious diseases potentially transmissible to humans. These diseases can be spread through contact with rat urine, droppings, and parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites.

Broader Rat Issues in Newport

Elsewhere in Newport, reports have emerged of rats "the same size as a rabbit" in the Pillgwenlly area, attributed to ongoing problems with fly-tipping in the city.

Further Comments from Royal Mail

A Royal Mail spokesperson stated,

"We are actively managing a pest issue at our Newport depot and have taken immediate steps to address it.
While there has been evidence of rodent activity in parts of the site, this has been largely localised and we have moved operations to an unaffected area of the depot while work is carried out."
