Fatal Fire in Bermondsey

A 16-year-old boy has died following a fire that broke out next to a fire station in south-east London, which was unoccupied at the time as firefighters were responding to another emergency.

The blaze occurred in a first-floor flat on Cooper's Road, Bermondsey, just before 15:00 GMT on Wednesday, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB). Fire crews arrived within six minutes and managed to bring the fire under control by 16:34.

One teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teenager left the property prior to the arrival of emergency services and was subsequently taken to hospital.

Fire crews from Dockhead, Dowgate, and Shadwell stations attended the incident because the Old Kent Road fire station teams were engaged with a separate emergency at the time, LFB informed the BBC.

Once the Old Kent Road crews returned, they also attended the scene. Their 64-meter turntable ladder was deployed during the operation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
