Israel and Lebanon Agree to Extend Ceasefire
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend a fragile ceasefire for an additional 45 days after two days of negotiations held in Washington DC, according to the US State Department.
"We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,"said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
US President Donald Trump initially announced the truce on 16 April; however, exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have persisted since that date.
On Wednesday, Lebanon's health ministry reported that Israeli air strikes resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals, including eight children, across southern Lebanon.
The State Department indicated plans to
"reconvene the political track of negotiations"in June.
"In addition, a security track will be launched at the Pentagon on May 29 with military delegations from both countries,"Pigott added.
