VAT Reduction to Lower Costs on Children's Meals
The cost of children's meals in Isle of Man restaurants is expected to decrease as a result of a new reduction in VAT on selected items, aimed at alleviating the financial burden on families amid rising living expenses.
Between 25 June and 1 September, families paying their bills will benefit from a VAT reduction from 20% to 5%, effectively lowering prices during this period.
Extension of VAT Cut to Family Entertainment
This VAT cut will also apply to family tickets for cinemas, theatres, and shows, as well as admission fees to various attractions, broadening the scope of support for family activities.
The measure aligns with similar initiatives announced in the UK to mitigate cost-of-living challenges and is accompanied by a continued freeze on fuel duty until 31 December.
Government Officials Comment on Support Measures
Treasury Minister Chris Thomas acknowledged the financial pressures on households due to increasing costs.
"Cutting VAT on family activities and extending fuel duty support is set to help residents manage everyday expenses while also giving a welcome boost to local businesses during the summer months," he said.
Fuel Duty Cut to Support Farming and Fishing Industries
In addition, the duty on red diesel will be reduced by approximately one third, decreasing from 10.18p to 6.48p per litre starting 15 June. This measure is intended to assist the farming and fishing sectors.
Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Clare Barber highlighted the significant impact of fuel costs on these industries.
"Fuel costs are a real and significant pressure for our hard-working farming and fishing businesses," she stated.
She further added, "The duty cut will provide practical support and greater certainty, helping to protect livelihoods and enabling producers to continue contributing to the Island's economy."
