Teen Boy Critically Ill After Incident at Monaghan's Emy Lough

A 16-year-old boy from County Tyrone is critically ill after struggling in Emy Lough, Monaghan. Local swimmers rescued him and performed CPR before emergency services arrived.

Incident at Emy Lough Leaves Teen Critically Ill

A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition following an incident at Emy Lough near Emyvale, County Monaghan, on Monday at approximately 17:00 local time.

According to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, the boy is from County Tyrone. Gardaí confirmed that emergency services treated the boy at the scene before he was airlifted to the Mater Hospital in Dublin for further medical care.

Rescue Efforts by Local Swimmers

Local swimmers Dzintra McConnon and Johnny McConnell noticed the boy struggling in the water and assisted in rescuing him. They removed him from the lake and administered CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

Speaking to RTÉ News, McConnon described the situation:

I saw the boy "go under the water" for "longer than usual".
I said 'something is wrong' and I said to my friend 'let's swim there'.
We got him eventually and lifted him out and started CPR until the ambulance arrived.

She also mentioned that she began shouting for help during the rescue effort.
