Aurora lights shimmering over Earth were captured on camera by Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, a cosmonaut from Russia's space agency Roscosmos, aboard the International Space Station. This natural phenomenon occurs when solar storms emit high-speed charged particles that collide with gases in Earth's atmosphere.

The most frequently observed color during these displays is green, although other colors such as pink and red can sometimes be seen as well.

"During yesterday’s strongest storm in two decades, there was plenty of red glow. It felt as if we were literally sailing inside that light," Kud-Sverchkov wrote on his Telegram channel on 20 January.
