Tree Causes Rail Disruption in West Midlands

Delays and cancellations are anticipated on rail services across parts of the West Midlands throughout Wednesday following a fallen tree that damaged railway lines and stranded a train.

At approximately 20:20 GMT on Tuesday, a tree fell at Penkridge, Staffordshire, impacting the railway infrastructure. Forty-five passengers aboard a London Northwestern Railway (LNR) service were evacuated and required to walk along the tracks to safety.

Impact on Rail Services

National Rail reported that the fallen tree caused damage to overhead electric wires, resulting in blocked lines between Stafford and Wolverhampton. This disruption has affected multiple train operators.

Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry have issued warnings that some services may be diverted and advised passengers that tickets are valid on selected alternative routes.

London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway have implemented rail replacement shuttle services operating between Stafford, Penkridge, and Wolverhampton.

Travel Advice for Passengers

Operators recommend that southbound travellers change trains at Crewe to reach Stafford, where rail replacement buses will transport passengers to Penkridge and Wolverhampton.

For northbound passengers, travel between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton is advised using West Midlands Railway services, with rail replacement buses scheduled to depart every 30 minutes.

Evacuation Details and Operator Response

LNR confirmed that passengers on the 18:33 service from Liverpool Lime Street to Birmingham New Street were kept informed by the train crew throughout the incident. The crew escorted passengers a short distance along the tracks in accordance with safe evacuation procedures.

A spokesperson for LNR expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers, stating:

"Disruption is expected until the end of Wednesday and we are working closely with Network Rail as they repair the overhead power lines."
"Any passenger delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation against the cost of their ticket via our Delay Repay scheme."

Ongoing Disruption and Passenger Guidance

Customers have been urged to check travel information prior to their journeys. National Rail has warned that the "major disruption" is expected to continue until the end of the day on Wednesday.
