Serena Williams' Wimbledon Doubles Participation Uncertain Due to Knee Injury
Serena Williams’s participation in the Wimbledon women’s doubles event alongside her sister Venus is currently uncertain following a knee injury sustained during her singles match.
The 44-year-old made a highly anticipated return to singles competition on Tuesday night after nearly four years away, receiving a warm reception on Centre Court. Williams delivered a strong performance before ultimately losing 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
Throughout the match, there was no visible sign that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion had injured herself. However, she did not attend the usual post-match press conference, instead providing a brief statement.
While players can face fines for missing press conferences, it was disclosed on Wednesday that Williams was dealing with a physical issue.
“Serena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the and WTA medical teams.
She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week.”
The statement was issued by Williams’s agent, Jill Smoller.
Serena and Venus Williams, whose combined age totals 90, have received a wild card entry into the doubles event. This marks their first appearance together at the All England Club since they secured their sixth doubles title there ten years ago.
