Sabalenka Overcomes Ostapenko to Reach Fourth Round

World number one Aryna Sabalenka secured a hard-fought victory over Jelena Ostapenko, setting up a highly anticipated fourth-round match against Naomi Osaka at Wimbledon.

The match featured two of the WTA Tour's most powerful hitters in an engaging evening contest on Centre Court. Sabalenka maintained composure against the increasingly frustrated 2017 French Open champion, ultimately winning 6-4, 6-4 to advance and keep her aspirations for a first Wimbledon title alive.

Her next challenge will be against fellow four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, who dominated Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 in just 65 minutes to reach the last 16 at SW19 for the first time in her career.

"Another aggressive player. Another very powerful match," Sabalenka commented on Osaka, against whom she holds a 4-1 head-to-head record. "I'm ready to fight and do whatever it takes to get through."

Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where Sabalenka has yet to reach the final.

Sabalenka demonstrated resilience against Latvia's Ostapenko, delivering a decisive blow in the fourth game of the first set and concluding it with a 111 mph ace.

Ostapenko grew visibly frustrated, unable to hold serve in her first three service games of the second set, gesturing emphatically and shouting towards her team.

Despite leading by a set and 4-1, questions lingered about Sabalenka's ability to close out the match, recalling her recent French Open quarter-final loss after holding a similar advantage.

The 28-year-old had collapsed from a set and 4-1 lead against Diana Shnaider, losing the deciding set 6-0 in a match she humorously said made her want to quit tennis.

After missing a match point on Ostapenko's serve at 5-3, Sabalenka steadied herself to hold serve and seal the victory after one hour and 32 minutes on court.

Osaka Breaks New Ground at Wimbledon

Naomi Osaka had never before won a match on Court One at Wimbledon.

All four of Osaka's major titles have been on hard courts, and she has historically struggled to replicate her powerful game on the clay of the French Open and the grass courts of the All England Club.

However, the Japanese 14th seed, arriving on Court One in another striking outfit, appeared comfortable at SW19 as she overwhelmed Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 in just 65 minutes.

This commanding performance comes less than five weeks after Osaka reached the last 16 at Roland Garros for the first time.

Osaka could face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in a high-profile clash if the Belarusian defeats Ostapenko later on Friday.

"I definitely felt really good today. I've played a lot of matches on grass for the past two weeks, so I felt really confident," the 28-year-old said.

Last month, Osaka reached her first grass-court final at the Bad Homburg Open but was forced to retire injured at the start of the second set against Karolina Muchova.

That run in Germany appears to have boosted Osaka's confidence on grass, as she has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon.

In a near-flawless first set, Osaka committed only six unforced errors and lost just five points on serve.

Kasatkina improved in the second set, recovering from an early break deficit, but Osaka quickly regained control, winning the next three games to secure the match.

Osaka won two US Open and two Australian Open titles between 2018 and 2021 but has only advanced past the fourth round of a Grand Slam once since returning from maternity leave in 2024.

Osaka's daughter Shai celebrated her third birthday on Thursday. In a post-match interview, Osaka shared a lighthearted moment with the crowd:

"I don't think I should be telling you this, but she was kind of bad yesterday. We tried to take her to the park, but then she needed to be in time-out, so we are going to try to take her today. It was an awesome birthday, she blew out her candles and made a wish, so I hope her wish is to behave better. If not, today is a new day for her!"

Osaka made another memorable entrance, wearing an embroidered cloak with a white trail.
