Klugman Claims First WTA Tour Victory at Nottingham Open

British teenager Hannah Klugman achieved her first win on the WTA Tour by defeating fellow Brit Harriet Dart at the Nottingham Open. Despite having lost in the qualifying rounds, the 17-year-old was granted entry into the main draw as a lucky loser following Katie Boulter's withdrawal.

Ranked world number 509, Klugman capitalized on this opportunity with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dart, who is ranked 152nd globally.

Klugman has also received a wildcard entry into the Wimbledon main draw as she transitions from junior to senior competition.

"I was at home [in Wimbledon] this morning after losing on Sunday. Everyone was telling me I had to drive up at 5am, so it's been a long day," Klugman said. "Because I lost [in qualifying] I had to take this chance, I had to give it my all. I didn't want to play with any fear or have any regrets. I'm so proud to get my first win today."

Background and Career Highlights

Klugman first gained attention when she won the prestigious Orange Bowl junior championships in Florida at the age of 13. Notable past champions include world number seven Coco Gauff and 18-time major singles winner Chris Evert.

In 2025, Klugman became the first British player in nearly 50 years to reach the French Open girls' final, where she was defeated in straight sets by Lili Tagger. She has also competed in two Grand Slam girls' doubles finals: Wimbledon in 2023 and the 2025 Australian Open.

Her WTA Tour main-draw debut occurred in Nottingham last year, followed by her first Wimbledon appearance a few weeks later, where she lost both singles matches.

Match Performance and Upcoming Opponent

During the match against Dart, Klugman's serve was notably strong, recording six aces without any double faults and winning 77% of her first-serve points. After a commanding first set, Klugman trailed 4-2 in the second set but then won four consecutive games to secure the match.

Klugman was the only British player to advance to the second round in Nottingham and will next face fourth seed Marie Bouzkova.

Fellow British player Alicia Dudeney, who also received a Wimbledon main-draw wildcard, was eliminated after a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) loss to Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska.
