Harriet Dart and Cam Norrie Suffer Early Defeats at Wimbledon

British tennis faced a challenging start at Wimbledon this year, with all 10 British players who completed their matches losing. Jack Pinnington Jones might have added to this tally had fading light not halted his match, where he trailed Brandon Nakashima by two sets and 4-3.

Recent strong performances by Emma Raducanu at Queen’s and Jack Draper in Eastbourne had raised expectations for British success at Wimbledon. However, with Draper and Raducanu both withdrawing due to injury on Monday, the remaining British players were unable to capitalize, succumbing one after another to defeat.

Harriet Dart’s Close Battle Against Jelena Ostapenko

Most British players lost to higher-ranked opponents, but the matches involving Harriet Dart and Cam Norrie were particularly notable. Dart, ranked 152, lost in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Dart was twice ahead by a break in the final set but could not close out the match. Norrie was defeated in a five-set thriller by American college champion Michael Zheng in a final-set tiebreak.

Dart had anticipated playing on court 17 but was called late Sunday night to replace Raducanu on No 1 Court. Playing on a big stage in front of a home crowd is a dream for British players, but Dart’s match began poorly as she fell behind 4-0 in the first set.

Despite a persistent foot issue, Dart showed resilience, moving well and hitting impressive winners. After leveling the match, she broke Ostapenko twice to lead 1-0 and then 2-1 in the third set. She recovered from 4-2 down to 4-4, capitalizing on Ostapenko’s frustration, which included sarcastic clapping that drew boos from the crowd. However, Ostapenko regained composure to secure the win.

“I thought it was an incredible match,” Dart said. “I think it was very challenging with the circumstances. We were both told, I think, past 10pm last night [about] the schedule change. Not really heard that before. I guess it’s the same for both of us. “The reality is I was up a break twice, but it’s a long way from the finish line. When you play players of the stature of Jelena, you know there is one or two points in it. And I think in the end that’s what it kind of came down to. I also think the second game of the third, she hit a line and two dead net cords. Today it felt like luck wasn’t really in my favour. “It’s really nice to play in front of a home crowd, and especially a rowdy crowd because I always think British people are generally quite subdued when they watch and are quite polite. So it was actually really nice to play in an atmosphere which felt like it was heavily supportive of me. So that was an amazing thing. I think for me, this is the first time I have really felt that here. I really felt their support on my side. It was great to have that energy and to kind of experience that.”

Cam Norrie’s Narrow Defeat to Michael Zheng

Cam Norrie, seeded 29th and a former Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2022 and quarter-finalist last year, entered the tournament with hopes of a deep run. However, his usual sharpness was absent as he lost 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (4) to Michael Zheng, ranked 143rd in the world.

Norrie reflected on the match, noting missed opportunities and crediting his opponent’s performance.

“If I could have had a few more matches leading in, I think I can win this match,” Norrie said. “There were so many small moments in the match that he did really well to go on his side. So, yeah, credit to him.”

Zheng is a promising player who, like Norrie, attended university in the United States and won the NCAA national championship twice. Demonstrating strong athleticism, Zheng served 21 aces and limited Norrie to just one break. He hit a total of 74 winners and maintained composure during the deciding tiebreak, where Norrie faltered early.
