De Minaur Advances in Straight Sets

Alex de Minaur, seeded seventh, overcame British qualifier Toby Samuel in straight sets to begin his French Open campaign under the Paris sunshine. Despite not being at his peak performance, de Minaur's quality proved superior as he secured a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

De Minaur noted a regained focus and confidence following his recent performance at the Hamburg Open, where he recovered from a clay-court slump marked by three early tournament exits. The 23-year-old Australian capitalized on the sun-baked courts of Roland Garros to outplay Samuel, who was making his main draw debut.

Samuel, a big-serving and confident player, had previously demonstrated his capability by defeating Belgian veteran David Goffin in qualifying and had impressively risen 1,786 places to world No. 159 since the end of 2024. Early in the match, he matched de Minaur point for point.

However, the eighth seed proved too consistent, breaking Samuel's serve at 3-2 after a series of errors and capturing the first set in 35 minutes. The second set began with de Minaur faltering in his service game, falling behind 0-2, but he quickly recovered to break back and take control at 4-3, despite Samuel missing several opportunities.

As temperatures climbed to 33°C in the third set, de Minaur accelerated, winning the last four games while conceding only three points. This victory sets up a second-round match against rising Belgian star Alexander Blockx, promising a more challenging encounter.

Kasatkina Bounces Back in Paris

Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina, rejuvenated after a recent slump, advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez. The Paris courts, where Kasatkina reached the semifinals in 2022, appeared to inspire her best performance.

Last year, Kasatkina was recognized as "the last Aussie standing" after making it to the fourth round. She aims to replicate or surpass that achievement this year, having maintained composure during critical points in a match featuring ten service breaks.

Swiatek Dominates Teenager Emerson Jones

In contrast, 17-year-old Emerson Jones faced a tough challenge against four-time champion Iga Swiatek on Court Philippe Chatrier. Swiatek delivered a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory in just over an hour, despite requiring treatment for a blister on her racquet hand after the first set.

Jones, a Gold Coast prospect and former junior world No. 1, showed resilience despite losing the first eight points. She surprised Swiatek by breaking back with an impressive inside-out forehand winner and demonstrated commendable spirit after recovering from a fall.

Jones managed to break again when trailing 0-3 in the second set, but Swiatek quickly regained control to close out the match.
