Raducanu's Early Exit at the French Open
Emma Raducanu's campaign at the French Open ended abruptly with a first-round loss to Argentina's Solana Sierra. The British number one struggled on the clay surface, losing the opening set 6-0 in just 25 minutes.
Despite a difficult start, Raducanu showed resilience in the second set. After falling behind by a double break, she fought back to force a tie-break. However, Sierra, ranked world number 68, regained composure and secured the match with a 7-6 (7-4) second set, winning 6-0 7-6 overall.
Challenging Season and Preparation
Raducanu's 2026 season has been hampered by a post-viral illness that sidelined her from the WTA Tour for over two months following the Indian Wells tournament in March. Her preparation for the French Open was less than ideal, with only one clay-court match played this season—a first-round loss at the Strasbourg Open earlier in the week.
The British player’s lack of familiarity with clay was apparent from the start. Sierra, who grew up playing on clay courts, broke Raducanu’s serve in the opening game and continued to dominate. Raducanu committed 15 unforced errors without registering a winner in the first set, allowing Sierra to complete a 'bagel' set.
Second Set Fightback
After a brief break off court, Raducanu returned to compete in the second set. She managed to win an early game, but Sierra maintained control, using powerful forehand winners to build a 4-1 lead. Raducanu then broke back, sparking hope as she leveled the set at 5-5 while Sierra was serving for the match.
Sierra immediately broke Raducanu’s serve again but was unable to close out the match, as Raducanu forced a tie-break. In the tie-break, Raducanu rallied from 5-1 down to 5-4, but Sierra ultimately prevailed after one hour and 45 minutes of play.
Looking Ahead
Raducanu has faced ongoing challenges with illness and injuries in recent years and has advanced beyond the third round of a Grand Slam only once since her 2021 US Open victory. She will now shift her focus to the British grass-court season, continuing her work with coach Andrew Richardson. Richardson, who guided her to the US Open title as a teenage qualifier in 2021, was rehired earlier this month.
Sierra will advance to face either Italian 13th seed Jasmine Paolini or Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the second round.
