Davies Returns as Scarlets Director of Rugby

Nigel Davies has been appointed as the director of rugby at Scarlets, signing a two-year contract to lead the club through upcoming seasons. Davies, who previously coached Scarlets from 2008 to 2012, returned to Llanelli on an interim basis in January amid a challenging first half of the season.

At that time, Scarlets were positioned at the bottom of the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings but managed to improve their ranking, moving above Zebre and Dragons. Following seven new player signings and enhancements to the backroom staff, Davies has now been officially confirmed as the head of the rugby programme for the next two campaigns.

"Scarlets has been a huge part of my life for more than 40 years and to be given the opportunity to lead the rugby programme at such an important time in the club's history is something I am enormously proud and honoured to do," Davies stated.

Context of Welsh Rugby and Scarlets' Future

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) continues to pursue plans to reduce the number of men's professional teams from four to three by 2028. Davies has committed to a contract that extends through this period, during which he has already strengthened the Scarlets squad. The current roster includes seven players selected for Wales' summer squad.

Recent signings include prop Corey Domachowski from Cardiff, Cullen Grace from the Crusaders, and Isaac Murray-MacGregor from Canterbury. Additionally, Scarlets have secured contract renewals with key forwards Fletcher Anderson, Josh Macleod, and Sam Lousi, as well as former Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies.

Coaching Staff Enhancements

In terms of coaching staff, Eamon O'Carroll will join Scarlets from St Helens at the conclusion of the Super League season, taking over as defence coach to replace Jared Payne. Aaron Dundon, previously with Leinster, has been appointed as the new forwards coach.

Davies, who had not been involved in professional rugby since his departure from Gloucester in 2014, will now lead the team’s rugby operations.

"We have worked hard to strengthen our squad, build an outstanding coaching team and ensure every part of the rugby programme is aligned behind one clear vision," Davies commented.

"That work is only the beginning. We understand the challenges ahead and the expectations that come with representing this club.

I genuinely believe we now have a group of players, coaches and staff who are committed to building something our supporters can believe in and be proud of."

Upcoming Season Fixtures

Scarlets are scheduled to begin the 2026-27 URC season with a home match against Cardiff on Saturday, 26 September. Their second-round fixture will be an away derby against Dragons.
