Glasgow Warriors Lose Lead as Bulls Stage Comeback in URC Semi-Final

Glasgow Warriors held control during the first half but faltered in the second, allowing the Bulls to overturn an 18-point deficit and secure victory in their United Rugby Championship play-off semi-final at Murrayfield.

Tries for the Bulls were scored by Steyn (2) and a penalty try, with Lancaster converting twice. Glasgow's tries came from Grobbelaar, Papier, and Klopper, with Pollard contributing two conversions and one penalty.

Following a quarter-final exit from the Champions Cup at the hands of Toulon, Glasgow Warriors aimed to maintain their pursuit of silverware against the South African Bulls, who have finished as URC runners-up for two consecutive years.

For the Bulls, who were defeated by Glasgow in the 2024 final, the path to their first URC title lies ahead against either Leinster or the Stormers. Leinster will host the Stormers in Dublin in the second semi-final scheduled for Saturday.

Match Progression

Handre Pollard opened the scoring for the Bulls with a penalty but was soon sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on, temporarily reducing the visitors to 14 men.

Glasgow responded swiftly, with Kyle Rowe passing to his namesake Steyn to score the first try. Moments later, a similar move saw Sione Tuipulotu offload to Steyn, who crossed in nearly the same location. Dan Lancaster successfully converted both tries.

The Bulls' situation worsened as a rolling maul by Glasgow resulted in a penalty try, and Ruan Nortje received a yellow card following the incident.

Despite the setbacks, the Bulls pressed on. They believed they had scored through Marcell Coetzee at a ruck, but the TMO ruled the try invalid. However, they soon scored when Johan Grobbelaar touched down, with Pollard adding the conversion.

Second Half Dynamics

Early in the second half, Glasgow's Scott Cummings was sin-binned for repeated infringements. The Bulls capitalized on this advantage as Embrose Papier evaded defenders to score their second try. Pollard's conversion attempt missed.

The Bulls continued to dominate, and Cummings' yellow card proved costly as Cameron Hanekom gained ground, setting up Francois Klopper to score under the posts. Pollard converted, bringing the Bulls to a 19-point unanswered lead.

Pollard missed three consecutive penalties, which kept Glasgow within one point with seven minutes remaining.

In the closing stages, Glasgow struggled to gain momentum despite multiple scrums, and the Bulls maintained their narrow lead to secure the win.
