Bristol demonstrated resilience to overcome reigning Premiership champions Bath and ease pressure on head coach Pat Lam, much to the delight of a packed Ashton Gate crowd.
Following a heavy 94-33 defeat at the hands of league leaders Northampton two weeks prior, the Bears delivered a more disciplined and determined performance.
Bath, missing key playmaker Finn Russell due to injury, struggled to find their usual fluency and failed to score in the second half as Bristol worked hard to secure a vital win in the penultimate game of the league season.
With this result, Bristol travel to Sale next weekend after narrowing the gap on fourth-placed Exeter to just one point. Meanwhile, Bath missed the opportunity to virtually guarantee a top-two finish.
Match Summary
The game began with a scrappy yet intense opening period. Bath eventually mounted sustained pressure, stringing together 11 phases that culminated in Ollie Lawrence powering over from close range to open the scoring.
Bristol struggled to maintain possession, and a costly turnover allowed Bath to extend their lead. Ben Spencer provided the pass for Guy Pepper to score in the corner, putting Bath further ahead.
Bristol responded positively with captain Fitz Harding finishing off a quick tap penalty to get on the scoreboard. However, Bath regained momentum, winning a penalty at a scrum that enabled prop Thomas du Toit to burrow over and increase the visitors' lead to 19-7 at halftime.
The hosts required a significant boost and received it early in the second half when England wing Henry Arundell was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on that denied Louis Rees-Zammit a try in the corner. This incident resulted in a penalty try awarded to Bristol.
Rees-Zammit nearly scored a spectacular solo try to level the scores but was unable to ground his own cleverly kicked ball.
Bath, back to full strength, believed they had secured a bonus-point try through replacement Alfie Barbeary, but the effort was disallowed due to a knock-on.
Ted Hill made a crucial try-saving tackle to halt a Bristol attack, but Max Lahiff soon powered over to give the home side the lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Both teams pushed for a decisive score in the closing stages. Bath full-back Santi Carreras attempted a long-range stoppage-time penalty from inside his own half to snatch victory, but the kick drifted wide, allowing Bristol to hold on for the win.
