Van Zyl Confident Despite Underdog Status
Corniel van Zyl was confirmed as permanent Cardiff head coach in April.
The United Rugby Championship (URC) odds position Cardiff as significant underdogs against the Stormers on Saturday, yet head coach Corniel van Zyl insists,
"we don't see this as the end".
On Wednesday, the URC released a predictor rating Cardiff's quarter-final chances in Cape Town at 32%, with only the Lions, who face Leinster, ranked lower at 22%.
Cardiff have maintained a top-eight position throughout the season and secured sixth place by defeating the Stormers at Arms Park two weeks ago, earning a play-off spot.
After narrowly missing out last season by a single point, the Welsh side will experience their first URC quarter-final but are determined not to participate merely as spectators.
"I don't want to sound arrogant or that I am getting ahead of myself, but we have also looked at what it would look like next week,"said Van Zyl, whose team would either travel to Leinster or host the Lions if they advance.
"We don't see this as the end and we are looking forward. It will take a massive effort and I know people will be writing us off, but we will have a good crack at it and see what happens."
Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has expressed skepticism about Cardiff's chances, welcoming the opportunity to face Van Zyl's side.
However, former Wales internationals Alex Cuthbert, Jonathan Davies, and Liam Williams told the Scrum V podcast that Dobson's remark labeling Cardiff as the "easiest" quarter-final opponent will likely motivate the Welsh team further.

Flying Welsh Flag Amid Uncertainty
Cardiff's journey to this stage has been gradual and steady.
In summer 2023, former head coach Matt Sherratt began pre-season with only eight players, conducting training sessions in a leisure centre squash court located in the northern part of the city.
The squad has since grown steadily, and despite Sherratt's departure just before the 2025-26 season to take a role with Wales, the club remained on track.
Van Zyl was promoted from forwards coach, and under his leadership, Cardiff won 11 of 18 URC matches, failing to secure a match point only once.
Throughout a season marked by off-field uncertainty in Welsh rugby — notably the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) plans to reduce professional men's clubs from four to three — Van Zyl's squad consistently delivered strong performances.
"We haven't just crept into these play-offs, let's be straight,"said Wales wing Josh Adams.
"We finished sixth and didn't drop out of the top eight all season.
We spoke at the beginning of the season about always being a team that wants to push forward, grow, adapt and try different things.
We have done that, which only works if everybody in the building buys into that.
We have finished sixth with all the uncertainty in Welsh rugby over the past 12 months – or longer – and how we have kept our focus and been disciplined in what we want to achieve has been excellent."
Cardiff 'Easiest' Play-Off Opponents - Stormers Boss
Cardiff have recorded only one away win this season — against Zebre in November — but their squad is strengthened by the return of Josh Adams and influential lock Josh McNally.
Both players are included in the starting lineup, alongside props Rhys Barratt and Keiron Assiratti, with the coaching staff selecting six forwards on the bench.
Van Zyl noted that Wales flanker Alex Mann and wing Mason Grady, who missed the last three regular-season games due to injury, were considered for selection but did not make the matchday squad.
"What we expect from the Stormers is the same. I know Cardiff Arms Park versus DHL Stadium is a big difference but we won't use the travel as an excuse,"said Van Zyl.
"Ultimately it will come down to the 80 minutes and how well we put our game on the pitch and fight for the jersey.
It was backs to the wall and we managed to find a way to win in Cardiff. We will try to repeat that."
The Stormers have made three changes to the starting lineup that lost in Cardiff, with captain Ruhan Nel and Dan du Plessis partnering in midfield and Seabelo Senatla returning on the wing.
Both full-back Damian Willemse and wing Leolin Zas are fit to start despite a recent training collision.
