Approval for Kelso Racecourse Upgrades

Plans have been approved for the comprehensive upgrade of Kelso Racecourse in Scotland to align with new British Horseracing Authority (BHA) guidelines.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has authorised the construction of new jockeys' weighing room facilities and additional event space at the racecourse.

The existing jockeys' facilities, currently located in the grandstand, will be relocated to a purpose-built structure adjacent to the parade ring. This development will also "retain and enhance" certain catering provisions.

The racecourse has been granted a deadline until the end of 2027 to complete the necessary upgrades to comply with BHA requirements.

Significance of Kelso Racecourse

Kelso is one of five racecourses in Scotland and is recognised as one of the leading jump racing venues in Britain.

Each season, the course hosts approximately 15 fixtures, including the notable Morebattle Hurdle Day, which features Scotland's most valuable hurdle race.

The venue attracts around 35,000 visitors annually.

Facility Improvements and Compliance

The new jockeys' weighing room will be designed to meet standards that "ensure appropriate safeguarding for participants and equal access to facilities for jockeys of all genders."

"This is not an intensification of use but modernisation of the facilities to meet with licensing requirements,"
stated a council report when granting approval for the plans.
