Fear and Gibson Face 'Illegal Deductions' at World Championships
Great Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson narrowly missed out on an ice dance bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships after receiving a two-point deduction.
Fear and Gibson were positioned third following the rhythm dance and appeared set to secure the bronze medal in Saturday's free dance. However, judges penalised them for an "illegal element," resulting in a drop to fourth place, just 0.22 points behind the American duo Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik in Prague.
The exact reason for the penalty was not disclosed, but reports suggest it was related to the height of an overhead lift performed during their routine.
Olympic Champions Cizeron and Fournier Beaudry Claim Gold
France's Olympic ice dance champions Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry won the gold medal with a total of 230.81 points. They became the fourth pair to achieve Olympic, World, and European titles within the same season.
The French pair finished 19.29 points ahead of the rest of the competitors, marking the largest winning margin in the history of the World Championships.
Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, bronze medallists at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, secured the silver medal. They were followed by Zingas and Kolesnik, who scored 209.20 points, while Fear and Gibson ended with 208.98 points.
The British duo, who earned bronze at last year's World Championships, also missed out on a medal at the recent Winter Olympics due to a costly error in their free dance routine.
Other Notable Results
Earlier in the competition, US skater Ilia Malinin won his third consecutive men's gold medal. Malinin rebounded from missing an Olympic medal last month, despite falling twice during his free skate.
