Early Promise and Coaching
The childhood coach of Aaron Rai has expressed immense pride in witnessing his protégé make history as the first Englishman to win the US PGA Championship since 1919.
Born in Wolverhampton, Rai showed exceptional golfing talent from a young age. At just five years old, he was filmed by the BBC after achieving a hole in one, highlighting his early prodigious skills.

Beginning at age seven, Rai refined his abilities at the 3 Hammers Golf Complex under the guidance of professional Darren Prosser.

Reflections on the Historic Win
Prosser commented on Rai's recent victory at Aronimink, stating:
"He just picked that course [Aronimink] off fantastically. I was hoping it was going to be the day that it all came together for him and I'm so delighted."
The triumph on Sunday marked the 31-year-old's first major championship title and made him the first non-American to claim the Wanamaker Trophy in ten years.
Looking back on Rai's development, Prosser added:
"I had a great feeling about him, he's such a level-headed guy and everything he does is measured.
The way he handled himself, the last few holes were brilliant. He kept his emotions in check and all the experience he has gained in the last few years, developing his game, it was brilliant.
I think he's going to push on now. I'm absolutely lost for words, I'm so proud of him."
Early Recognition and Continued Guidance
Rai's talent was evident early on. After winning his first tournament at age five, which included a hole in one, he was interviewed by BBC Midlands Today. During the interview, while being followed around the golf course by the crew, he confidently spoke to them and, when asked about his future ambitions, replied cheekily:
"A racing driver!"
Throughout his youth, Rai was featured multiple times in the Wolverhampton Express & Star as he continued to exceed expectations.
By age ten, Rai was coached by Andrew Proudman, who also worked in the 3 Hammers pro shop, alongside another Wolverhampton professional, Piers Ward. Both continue to provide guidance to Rai.
Professional Achievements and Personality
Rai secured his first European Tour title at the Hong Kong Open in 2018. His distinctive choice to wear gloves on both hands soon attracted attention.
Prosser described Rai's character as well matched to his golfing skill:
"He's very calm, very humble, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet,"
Regarding his recent victory, Rai, who has faced challenges practicing this year due to a neck injury, told the BBC:
"It is very surreal.
It has been a frustrating season, so being stood here is outside of my wildest imagination."
