Determined and Humble Beginnings

Staff at Wolverhampton Grammar School, where champion golfer Aaron Rai was a student, described him as a "very determined and a very humble young lad" who has fulfilled his dream.

Rai, originally from Wolverhampton, made history by becoming the first Englishman in over a century to win the US PGA Championship. This victory marked the first major title of his professional career.

Kathy Dyer, head of games at Wolverhampton Grammar School, recalled that Rai was already committed to playing golf daily when he joined the school in 2006. She mentioned that his father would collect him after his morning lessons.

The school plans to celebrate Rai's achievement once the exam season concludes, according to Dyer.

Dyer also noted that she and Rai started at the school on the same day and that he was in her first form group in year seven.

"A very quiet, very determined and a very humble young lad,"

she described him.

"Aaron would always catch up on his work, he was always a good student and he never fell behind even though he played golf nearly every single day."

She also recalled a remarkable feat from his youth, stating that at age 15, Rai entered the Guinness Book of World Records for successfully putting 207 consecutive putts from 10 feet away within 90 minutes.

Early Impressions and Academic Balance

Headteacher Nic Anderson recounted his first encounter with Rai during the school admission interview.

"I met this little boy, aged 10, big smile on his face, clearly wanted to come to our school, really excited about his day ahead. I just remember an excitable young lad,"

he said.

"He had a dream, and the dream was to be as successful as he could.
I don't know whether he actually believed he'd get to where he's got to in terms of winning a major, but he certainly was determined, and he worked incredibly hard – both at school, in his academics but also on the golf course."

Anderson added that Rai chose to focus on golf at age 16 but returned to complete his A Level mathematics to ensure he had a fallback option.

The school expressed great pride in Rai's accomplishments. However, due to the ongoing exam season, organizing a celebration with all pupils has been challenging. They intend to honor his success when circumstances permit.

"It's just wonderful news for the city,"

Anderson concluded.
