Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Practice Highlights
Mercedes driver George Russell led the first practice session at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, setting the fastest time ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Russell's lap was 0.203 seconds quicker than Piastri's, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc securing third place, followed by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
The session featured six junior drivers replacing regular drivers, complying with the mandatory rule requiring teams to run at least two practice sessions annually with emerging talents. McLaren's Leonardo Fornaroli was the fastest among the juniors, finishing fifth overall. Estonian Paul Aron, driving an Audi while on loan from his Alpine reserve role, placed sixth.
Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson took seventh place, with Dino Beganovic, piloting Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari, separating him from team-mate Arvid Lindblad. Alpine's Franco Colapinto completed the top 10, followed by Haas driver Oliver Bearman and Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto.
The session was largely incident-free, though Cadillac reserve driver Colton Herta experienced a moment over the kerbs at Turn Eight, as did Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Dino Beganovic. Leclerc was testing a significant aerodynamic upgrade on the Ferrari, including a new floor design, which Lewis Hamilton is set to use in the second practice session later in the day.
Williams' reserve driver Luke Browning was unable to complete any laps due to an electrical issue in Alex Albon's car.
