Leclerc Commits to Ferrari with New Long-Term Deal
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has agreed to a new long-term contract with the Italian team. The 28-year-old's deal comes ahead of his home Grand Prix in Monaco this weekend. Having signed his previous contract in 2024, Ferrari confirmed that this renewal will secure Leclerc's presence with the team for the "coming seasons."
Since joining Ferrari in 2019, the Monegasque driver has competed in 155 races, achieving eight victories. Currently, he holds third place in the drivers' championship. Leclerc has an impressive record at Monaco, having qualified on pole position three times, started second twice, and third once over the past six years.
"I couldn't be happier to continue this journey with Scuderia Ferrari HP," Leclerc said. "It has always been so much more than just a team to me. It's the team I've loved and dreamt of being part of since I was a child, and after all these years it has become a second family.
"Together we've shared incredible moments and some tougher ones, but I believe in this team more than ever, and I'm deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello.
"Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, but it's also a responsibility I never take for granted.
"I'll continue to give absolutely everything I have to bring this team back to where it belongs, at the very top, for everyone in Maranello, and above all for the tifosi, whose passion is the heartbeat of this Scuderia."
Leclerc's Career and Records with Ferrari
Leclerc joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016 and, after winning the Formula 2 title in 2017, made his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2018. He is now Ferrari's second-most capped Formula 1 driver and ranks second in pole positions for the team with 27, behind only Michael Schumacher.
The new contract is expected to allow Leclerc to surpass Schumacher's 179 starts for Ferrari, although surpassing Schumacher's 58 pole positions remains a more challenging target.
Team principal Fred Vasseur commented on the renewal, stating:
"Charles has been part of the Ferrari family for many years now and this renewal feels like something very natural for us.
"Over these seasons we have seen him grow, to become not only one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1, but also a person who is completely at one with the team and everything Ferrari represents.
"We appreciate his talent, we love his determination and the way he approaches every day with the people in the Scuderia, both on and off the track. We know how much this project means to him and we are happy to continue working towards our shared goals."
Analysis - Leclerc's Sensible Renewal Amid Elusive Championship Dream
Charles Leclerc announced his contract renewal with Ferrari accompanied by an elaborate video on social media expressing his deep affection for the team. Having been part of Ferrari's driver academy since 2016 and a protege since age 14, Leclerc described joining Ferrari as "living a dream." He referred to the team as "family," adding:
"Maybe that is exactly what makes this moment so special. For me, it's always been clear. The dream is still alive, and I'm proud to continue chasing it together."
The dream Leclerc refers to is winning the World Championship with Ferrari, a goal that remains elusive. Since joining Ferrari in 2019, Leclerc has established himself as one of Formula 1's elite drivers but has secured only eight Grand Prix victories. This modest tally reflects Ferrari's ongoing challenges over the past two decades rather than any shortfall on Leclerc's part.
This season's new regulations brought renewed hope for Ferrari's competitiveness, but that promise has yet to fully materialize.
Sources within Ferrari indicate that Leclerc's contract was not due to expire this year, suggesting this agreement is a contract extension rather than the exercise of an option clause. It is believed his previous contract extended through the end of next year, similar to his teammate Lewis Hamilton's situation. Ferrari clearly aimed to secure Leclerc's future amid a potentially turbulent driver market, especially with Max Verstappen's future in Formula 1 uncertain.
Leclerc remains a highly sought-after driver, but realistically, his options outside Ferrari are limited. Mercedes is reportedly committed to George Russell and Lewis Hamilton for at least next year, with Verstappen expected to be the priority should any changes occur. McLaren is also dedicated to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for the foreseeable future.
Given this context, extending his contract with Ferrari—likely through 2029 according to industry speculation—appears a prudent choice for Leclerc, despite the ongoing challenges in achieving his championship ambitions.
