Wrexham's Strong Performance in Championship

Wrexham have secured victory in 15 of their 35 Championship matches this season.

Manager Phil Parkinson commended his team's determination to secure wins, highlighting their clinical edge during the match at Charlton Athletic. Their continued resilience in the top six positions allows them to focus on the upcoming FA Cup fixture against Chelsea.

Ollie Rathbone's volley at The Valley ensured Wrexham maintain their play-off position with a four-point lead over seventh place. This gap guarantees their place in the top six next weekend, regardless of other results, as they prepare to face Liam Rosenior's Premier League side at Stok Cae Ras.

Despite the comfortable margin, Wrexham's victory was hard-fought. Charlton manager Nathan Jones expressed frustration over his team's inability to convert numerous chances during the match. Parkinson noted that since Christmas Day, Wrexham have accumulated more points than any other team in the second tier, but acknowledged that not every win is straightforward.

Parkinson Praises Team's Resilience

"It was always going to be a hard game because Nathan's teams give everything and they're fighting for points," Parkinson said. "But we showed incredible resilience to get the win. We came under a bit of pressure but the way we defended the box today was exceptional and it was important we saw it through."

Parkinson emphasized the importance of maintaining focus ahead of the high-profile FA Cup match. He conveyed a clear message to his players before the game to avoid distractions.

"I didn't want to be the team who has one eye on the FA Cup and didn't turn up here," he said, acknowledging that Charlton would present a physical challenge. "That's not what we're all about, but we've ticked that box and now I just want to embrace the FA Cup week and enjoy because we've worked hard to get to this round and to go into it in the top six."

Charlton's Missed Opportunities

Charlton manager Nathan Jones recognized Wrexham's strong position but was puzzled by his own team's failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

"Never mind winning the game, or drawing the game, how we haven't scored three or four I don't know because it was dominant performance and I thought we were excellent," he said. "But we have to take chances because they weren't just half chances – and if you don't, that's what happens."

Analysis and Reflections

Rathbone's decisive strike secured Wrexham's win over a wasteful Charlton side. Jones, who previously managed Southampton, Stoke City, and Luton Town, and was involved in the rivalry between the two clubs during their promotion chase from League One last season, admitted frustration with the outcome.

"Good sides find ways to win games, that's what they've done – and they are a good side," he said. "You don't win the games they have in a four-year period if you are not. At times they have to ride your luck and it's up you to punish them – we didn't and that was the difference. They have individuals that can win games and they find ways to do that."
