Wrexham Urged to Value Top Six Spot Amid Championship Push

Wrexham urged to 'appreciate' top six challenge

Wrexham have secured 13 points from the last 15 available in away Championship fixtures.

Manager Phil Parkinson has encouraged his Wrexham squad to recognise the strong position the club currently occupies as the Red Dragons continue their pursuit of a fourth consecutive promotion.

Since Christmas, Parkinson's team has amassed 26 points from 12 league matches, the highest tally in the division during that period.

This performance places Wrexham sixth in the Championship standings, holding a four-point advantage over seventh-placed Southampton ahead of their upcoming match at Charlton Athletic scheduled for Saturday at 15:00 GMT.

"We've finished the season strong in recent years and the aim is to do it again," said Parkinson.

"I think mental freshness is key, getting that right, getting the rotation as well and the physical and mental freshness is really key at this stage of the season.

"I think really appreciating where we are this season in terms of in the Championship, in the top six and just making sure we really enjoy that feeling of being in this situation.

"That's what we keep stressing, all the staff and the lads, I want us to go out and rise to the challenge each and every week and we'll see where it takes us."

Wrexham boost play-off hopes with Portsmouth win

Wrexham players Rathbone and Dobson have recently signed new contracts with the club.

The team remains unbeaten in their last five away league games. Only five teams in the Championship have a higher average of points per away game than Wrexham's 1.5 this season.

Parkinson is optimistic that his squad can enter their highly anticipated FA Cup fifth round match against Chelsea at Stok Cae Ras on Saturday, 7 March (17:45 GMT), following three consecutive league victories.

"We're in good form and we go there (to Charlton) with a huge challenge on our hands to go into the FA Cup weekend in good league form," added Parkinson.

"That's the aim, and we'll be doing everything we can to prepare the team properly, to have a clear understanding when we get down there what's required on the day, and then it will be about executing it come three o'clock."

Parkinson addresses illness concerns

After Wrexham's 2-1 victory over Portsmouth, Parkinson disclosed that strikers Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith—who scored the opening goal against Portsmouth—had been dealing with illness.

The manager confirmed there are no new health concerns ahead of the match against Nathan Jones' Charlton Athletic.

"Yeah, one or two others as well (had been ill), but they're all back in this morning. We were all off yesterday and back in today," said Parkinson.

"It's about getting the ones who didn't play the right level of training, the ones who did play a second day of recovery and picking the team tomorrow to go and put a performance down at Charlton."

January signing Zak Vyner was sidelined for his first three matches after transferring from Bristol City due to a toe injury.

The 28-year-old has appeared as a substitute in the recent league victories against Ipswich Town and Portsmouth and is now available for selection when needed.

"It's been good in a way that we've been doing well. It's given the time to get his toe completely right. He's training again today."
