Gianluca Prestianni Faces Provisional Suspension Ahead of Bernabeu Clash

Gianluca Prestianni trained with his Benfica teammates at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium despite being provisionally suspended for the upcoming Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid.

The Argentine winger is banned from participating in Wednesday's match in Madrid due to a suspension linked to a racism allegation.

Vinicius Jr claimed that Prestianni racially abused him shortly after the Brazilian scored a remarkable goal that secured a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid in the first leg.

Prestianni denies the accusation of racial abuse and is set to miss the return leg after UEFA imposed a one-match provisional ban. Benfica has appealed this sanction, though it is considered unlikely to affect the match scheduled for Wednesday.

Despite the ban, Prestianni was seen training with Benfica on Tuesday, hoping for a reversal of the suspension to allow his participation.

Courtois Defends Vinicius' Celebration

Earlier on Tuesday, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois commented on Vinicius Jr's celebration during last week's Champions League fixture in Portugal, stating it did not justify any suspected act of racism.

Vinicius received a yellow card for celebrating in front of Benfica supporters after scoring in Lisbon.

Following the game, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho expressed his view that the Brazilian forward's celebration was disrespectful and provoked the crowd.

"Unfortunately [he was] not just happy to score that astonishing goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way," Mourinho said.

Responding to Mourinho's remarks, Courtois said:

"Mourinho is Mourinho and, as a coach, you'll always defend your club.

But it bothers me that Vinicius' celebration is being used against him.

Vini didn't do anything bad. He celebrated the same way many rivals have celebrated against us.

It happened, and we can't justify a suspected act of racism because of a celebration. I think we have to be less stupid as a society."

Mourinho, who is suspended for the second leg at the Bernabeu following his dismissal during the match, mentioned that he received differing accounts of the incident from Vinicius and Prestianni.

Support and Reactions Surrounding the Incident

Courtois declined to comment on statements from Benfica president Rui Costa, who asserted that Prestianni "is not racist" and deserves the club's trust after being "crucified," but reaffirmed his support for Vinicius.

"Vini has never said anything like that, so I'm 100% sure he heard it," Courtois stated.

I believe him completely. Since he's keeping quiet, we'll never know for sure, but there's not much more we can do."

The match was paused for 10 minutes after Vinicius alerted referee Francois Letexier to the alleged incident, during which Real Madrid players temporarily left the pitch.

Courtois said Real Madrid were prepared to "stand their ground" but agreed to resume the game after Vinicius expressed his desire to continue.

Reports also indicated racist gestures were made in the stands at Estadio da Luz.

"The other things that happened in the stands, in my opinion, warrant stopping the match and kicking those people out," Courtois added.

As footballers, we don't see everything, but it happens when we're focused on the game. There have to be people in charge who see that.

There's a Benfica security guard who's two metres away and he has to act. We can keep improving in these areas... and stop being so foolish."

UEFA's Response and Calls for Action

UEFA has provisionally sanctioned 20-year-old Prestianni pending a full investigation by an ethics and disciplinary inspector. The governing body indicated that further penalties could be imposed once the investigation concludes.

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa urged UEFA to use this incident as an opportunity to make a definitive statement against racism.

"We have a great opportunity to mark a turning point in the fight against racism," Arbeloa said.

UEFA, which has always been and has led this fight against racism, now has the chance not to leave it at just a slogan, at just a nice banner before matches, and I hope that they seize this opportunity."
