Tierney Highlights Importance of Experience in Title Race
Kieran Tierney scored Celtic's opening goal against Rangers on Sunday and believes the trophy-winning experience of interim manager Martin O'Neill and several teammates will provide a significant advantage in the increasingly competitive Scottish Premiership title race.
Although Celtic have dominated the Premiership by finishing top in 13 of the last 14 seasons, the current campaign has evolved into a four-horse race. Rangers last secured the title five years ago, Heart of Midlothian in 1960, and Motherwell in 1932.
Celtic winger James Forrest has been part of all 13 recent title wins, midfielder Callum McGregor has won 10, Tierney himself has four titles, and O'Neill lifted the trophy three times during his initial managerial tenure.
"Experience of a title run is a massive thing," left-back Tierney said.
"We've got a captain, Cal, who's won so many trophies, James Forrest and other boys who have been there in the past as well, so it's amazing to have guys like that in the changing room.
"Even the manager himself, who's been involved. It's brilliant for us and I hope it helps."
Current Standings and Team Perspectives
Celtic, traditionally accustomed to leading the league, currently sit third ahead of their upcoming match against Aberdeen on Wednesday. They trail Hearts by eight points and Rangers by two points but hold a game in hand over both teams. Motherwell is only two points behind Celtic.
"It's probably exciting if you are watching it from the outside," Tierney admitted. "It's probably something that's not been there for a while.
"It's massive, but regardless of the situation, every week the game matters for Celtic.
"It's not new to us. Maybe the situation is, with three or four teams going for it, but the pressure of playing for Celtic is not new to us.
"But we are focusing on ourselves, not the teams around us."
Recent Performances and Upcoming Challenges
After coming from two goals down to draw the Old Firm derby away at Rangers on Sunday, with Tierney scoring Celtic's opener, the team approaches the Pittodrie fixture with optimism and the opportunity to overtake their city rivals.
Tierney noted that O'Neill's squad is analyzing the reasons behind their slow starts in recent matches but is eager to build on the determination, character, and quality demonstrated in the second half at Ibrox.
"It would be massive" to move above Rangers, Tierney said, but he also emphasized the difficulty of the upcoming match.
He acknowledged that despite Aberdeen's recent poor form and eighth-place standing, playing at Pittodrie is challenging for any team at any point in the season.
Tierney also recognized the need for Celtic to improve their overall performances to secure the title.
"You can't just rely on resilience and character. We need to show we can play as well."
