McGinn's Rise and Brazil's Focus
John McGinn is currently experiencing a remarkable period in his football career. Over the past year, the Aston Villa captain has played a pivotal role in his team’s success, including helping them secure the Europa League title. Notably, he scored two exceptional goals in the semi-final against Nottingham Forest, showcasing his high-level performance.
Beyond club achievements, McGinn has been integral to Scotland’s impressive run in November, which is on course to see him and his teammates qualify for the World Cup. At 31 years old, the midfielder has also drawn the attention of Brazilian football legend Thiago Silva.
Brazil's Preparation and Silva's Assessment
Thiago Silva, a Champions League winner and former Chelsea player, has been closely monitoring Scotland ahead of Brazil’s scheduled match against Steve Clarke’s team in Miami on 24 June. Despite the notable skills of Scottish players such as Scott McTominay, known for his bicycle kick, and Andy Robertson’s tactical intelligence and determination, Silva believes it is McGinn who poses the greatest challenge to Brazil’s squad led by Carlo Ancelotti.
"For me, the captain of Aston Villa, McGinn, is an amazing player," the 41-year-old said. "He plays inside the midfield, he plays on the wing sometimes. He has many qualities.
"I think the Brazil staff and Carlo Ancelotti, they will need to pay attention to this player.
"I think the match will be played at a good level."

Silva's Coaching Journey and Career Reflections
Silva spoke to BBC Scotland while attending his A Licence coaching course in Edinburgh, a location suggested by Porto president Andre Villas-Boas. The former Paris Saint-Germain defender currently plays for Villas-Boas’ club, having returned to Europe with hopes of securing a place in Ancelotti’s World Cup squad. However, this ambition has not materialized, and Silva remains uncertain about his future.
"A little bit, a little bit," he admitted when asked about his disappointment at missing the World Cup.
"But it's normal. It's decisions, it's football. So I accept this. So now I need to... To put my mind to the course as well. It's better for me. After, I need to enjoy it with my family.
"[Scotland] is a big 11. It's a good team, they play well. But, for Brazil, for me, is better, in this moment.
"But, in this level, you need to wait. Speak before, it changes nothing."
