The highly anticipated Finalissima match between European champions Spain and Copa America champions Argentina, scheduled to take place in Qatar on 26 March, has been cancelled due to the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Lionel Messi's Argentina, who won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, were set to face Spain in this prestigious event organized every four years by UEFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).

UEFA Explores Alternative Venues

UEFA considered alternative arrangements after the cancellation in Qatar. Proposals to hold the match at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium or to play a two-legged tie in Madrid and Buenos Aires were presented but ultimately rejected by the Argentine Football Association.

"Due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar.
UEFA explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association."

has reached out to the Argentine FA for comment regarding the situation.

Scheduling Conflicts and Further Negotiations

UEFA also revealed that Argentina proposed playing the match after the World Cup. However, Spain was unable to accommodate this suggestion due to a lack of available dates.

"Argentina made a counter suggestion to play the game after the World Cup but, as Spain has no available dates, that option had to be ruled out."

The Spanish Football Association stated it had "worked intensively" to ensure the match could proceed in any possible format, whether in Spain or at a neutral venue.

"Spain was prepared to play as it has always been stated. They set no conditions.
Spain, together with UEFA, has offered all possibilities."

Impact on Other Sporting Events

In related developments, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Formula 1 Grands Prix, scheduled for April, were also cancelled due to safety concerns stemming from the regional conflict.

Formula 1 officials cited the ongoing conflict across the region as the reason for the cancellation, emphasizing that it was not safe to hold the races under current circumstances.
