Valverde Hospitalized After Altercation with Tchouaméni
Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde required stitches following a physical confrontation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni, marking the second such incident between the two players within two days amid ongoing turmoil at the club.
The altercation prompted an emergency meeting among players and led Real Madrid to initiate disciplinary proceedings. The fight resulted in visible injuries, with Valverde needing medical treatment.
This episode adds to a series of challenges facing the club, which is poised to finish a second consecutive season without a trophy. Additionally, Álvaro Arbeloa will not continue as coach, and divisions within the dressing room appear to be deepening. Real Madrid is scheduled to face Barcelona in the clásico on Sunday, a match with significant title implications.

Details of the Confrontations
Valverde and Tchouaméni nearly engaged in a physical fight during a training session on Wednesday, an argument that spilled into the dressing room. Teammates intervened to separate the two as they pushed each other. The following day, Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported that the pair fought again on Thursday, resulting in Valverde falling and sustaining a head injury that required stitches.
Valverde was initially treated at Real Madrid’s medical facilities at Valdebebas before being transported to the nearby Hospital Blua Sanitas Valdebebas for further care. Surveillance footage captured the 27-year-old midfielder’s car traveling between the training ground and hospital, although Valverde himself was not visible in the vehicle.
Incident Triggered by Accusations of Leaking Information
The confrontation began when Valverde declined to shake Tchouaméni’s hand upon his arrival at training, accusing the French midfielder of leaking details about the previous day’s altercation. Tchouaméni denied the accusation and urged for the cessation of such claims, but Valverde persisted. Despite efforts by other players to defuse the situation, the dispute escalated into a physical tussle during which Valverde fell and struck the corner of a table.
Following the incident, an emergency meeting was convened in the dressing room. Valverde returned home on Thursday afternoon. Club captain Dani Carvajal was seen returning to Valdebebas for further discussions with club officials.
Real Madrid issued an official statement on Thursday evening:
"Real Madrid confirm that, following the incident that occurred this morning in the first-team training session, it has decided to open disciplinary proceedings against our players, Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni. The club will communicate the conclusions at the appropriate time, once the relevant internal proceedings are complete."
Medical Update and Player Statements
The club’s medical department released a statement regarding Valverde’s condition:
"After the tests carried out by the Real Madrid medical services on our player Federico Valverde, they have diagnosed head trauma. Valverde is at home in good condition, where he should rest for between 10 and 14 days, per the medical protocol for this diagnosis."
Valverde addressed the incident in a statement posted on Instagram late Thursday:
"At no point did my team-mate hit me, and I didn’t hit him either, although I understand it’s easier for you to believe we came to blows or that it was intentional, but that didn’t happen. I feel that my anger about the situation, my frustration at seeing some of us struggling to get through the end of the season on our last legs, giving it our all, pushed me to the point of arguing with a team-mate."
He further apologized for the club’s difficulties and commented:
"The result is a build-up of things that culminate in a senseless fight, damaging my image and leaving room for doubt - for people to fabricate stories, slander me, and sensationalise an incident."
Context of Club Turmoil
This incident follows recent internal conflicts at Real Madrid. Left-back Álvaro Carreras recently confirmed he was struck by Antonio Rüdiger in an incident he described as "resolved." Additionally, Kylian Mbappé confronted a member of Arbeloa’s backroom staff during training and had to defend himself while recovering from injury.
Midfielder Dani Ceballos has been excluded from the squad following a confrontation with Arbeloa. The departure of former head coach Xabi Alonso was preceded by an incident in October when Vinícius Júnior left the pitch during the clásico in frustration.
At that time, Real Madrid led Barcelona by five points at the top of La Liga. Heading into Sunday’s match, they trail their rivals by 11 points with only four games remaining. A failure to win would hand Barcelona the league title.
