Scotland Lose Key Midfielders for World Cup Opener

Chelsea Cornet and Kirsty Maclean will not feature in Scotland's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg due to injury.

Scotland, managed by Melissa Andreatta, are set to face Luxembourg, ranked 108th globally, in a two-match series. The first match will take place in Esch-sur-Alzette on Tuesday, 3 March, followed by the return fixture at Hampden Park four days later.

Twenty-year-old Liverpool midfielder Kirsty Maclean, who has earned 14 caps for Scotland, was expected to be a likely starter. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Chelsea Cornet from Birmingham City was aiming to make her fourth appearance for the national team.

Maclean missed Liverpool's FA Cup victory over Everton on Sunday, while Cornet was an unused substitute in Birmingham's dominant win against Chatham Town the previous day.

To fill their positions, Rangers defender Leah Eddie, who has four caps, and Nottingham Forest midfielder Amy Rodgers, aged 25 and with 12 international appearances, have been called up to the squad.

Scotland are strong favourites to begin their World Cup campaign with two wins against Luxembourg, a team ranked 80 places below them.

This will be the first meeting between Scotland and Luxembourg. The other teams in European qualification Group H include Belgium and Israel.
